Maisy Page, in Guatemala to visit our partner Starfish One by One, brought along her STF 360 Flip cam to make videos for our blog!
For those of you jumping onto She’s the First more recently, here’s a quick refresher on what She’s the First 360 — the travel series you currently see in action with Christen Brandt, Maisy Page, and Kate Lord in Guatemala – is all about! This project of She’s the First is still in “beta” and was created in July 2010.
She’s the First 360 is a user-generated travel series where young people visit current or prospective partners in the She’s the First directory, talk to locals, and capture the stories of girls and their community through video, photography, blogging, and social media (#STF360 on Twitter). These trips are documented on the blog and the media collected will be showcased on the relaunched shesthefirst.org and catalogued on the She’s the First Flickr, Vimeo, and YouTube pages. The expected outcome is that when people vividly see what it’s like be a girl in the countries where we fund sponsorships, they will be more inclined to take action and donate, because they understand their impact.
So far, She’s the First 360 travelers have been to Peru, Haiti, and Guatemala on assignment for She’s the First. The trips are self-funded but in the future, She’s the First hopes to work with airlines and companies particularly interested in travel on grants for deserving U.S. students and post-graduates to participate. If you plan on taking a trip in 2011 and would like to blog and report for us, please email info@shesthefirst.org!
Another fun She’s the First 360 fact: We have our own Flip Video camera! You can order one, like Maisy has, on store.theflip.com, and $10 from each purchase is donated to our Tanzania parter AfricAid (the beneficiary of our GIRLS WHO ROCK 2010 concert).
