“First of Many”

Tibbetts launched She’s the First (shesthefirst.org), a nonprofit organization that sponsors young women’s educations in eight developing countries, giving them the tools to become the first in their families to graduate from secondary school. “Many of these girls have illiterate parents,” says Tibbetts, who was the first college graduate in her own family. “Together, we’re breaking barriers.”

Happy Graduation Day, Francisca!

Francisca at school. Photo by Kate Lord.

If you’ve been following our blog for a while, you probably already know Francisca’s story. STF photographer Kate Lord and researcher Maisy Page met her when we travelled to Guatemala in January, and we each fell in love with her spirit the moment we met her. She’s the kind of girl you notice as soon as you walk into the room, because she has the biggest smile, the loudest laugh, and friendliest eyes there. Despite the language barrier (my Spanish would make Dora the Explorer cry), Francisca was willing to be fast friends, and learning her story remains one of the best parts of my Guatemala trip.

But today is a big day for her, because today is her graduation! She’s the first in her family to graduate high school, though things didn’t always look so certain: She had to drop out for a few years when her family needed her to work, and was only able to go back when the Starfish One by One program (our partner in Guatemala) learned about her and brought her into the program. And now? She’ll be one of their first graduates!

It’s stories like Francisca’s that keep all of us at She’s the First motivated, because she reminds us how much of a difference an education can make — hopefully, she’ll have the same effect on you. Here’s a video Kate made about Francisca (we’ve featured it here before) while she was still in school:

Isn’t it thrilling to know she achieved her goal of graduating, and is now on to university?

Have any words of encouragement or congratulations for Francisca? Write them in the comments, and we’ll make sure they get to her!

New Teachers For South Sudan, Slowing Teen Pregnancy & More

Female Circumcision Rates Lowered in Senegal
Over 92 millions African girls have undergone female circumcision, a dangerous and painful tradition often performed with little to no pain medication. Although this practice is still carried out in many countries, the African nation of Senegal is working to put a stop to cutting. A local group called Tostan has had a major impact in lowering the use of this practice with an education program that seeks to build support on the dangers of cutting. While Tostan is careful not to denounce it as barbaric, they do seek to change social conventions and perceptions of cutting. Read more about Tostan’s efforts here.

Argentina Lowers Illiteracy Rate
In 2004 Argentina created “Encuentros,” a literacy program dedicated to lowering the country’s illiteracy rate. The program called on civil society volunteers to teach reading and writing in a range of over 50,000 community centers and was heavily focused on lowering the illiteracy rate of women, particularly those over thirty years old. As a result of the program’s success, Argentina’s illiteracy rated has dropped from 2.6 percent in 2001 to 1.9 percent in 2010. Read more about the program here.

Education in Tanzania Critical to Slowing Teenage Pregnancy
In Tanzania’s region of Shinyanga the average woman marries young and gives birth to seven children. Unfortunately for the hundreds of schoolgirls who become pregnant, their education is brought to a halt as the taboo of young mothers returning to school is especially strong. For a country with a soaring population, the answer to slowing growth is increasing education for girls, which leads to lower birth rates and increased economic growth. Read more here.

Uganda to Create Jobs for Teachers in South Sudan
The president of Uganda Yoweri Museveni says his country will send teachers to South Sudan in an effort to help the new nation recover from decades of conflict that have badly affected literacy and the education system. Read more here.

Shop for the Cupcake Cause!

She’s the First has truly put tie-dye cupcakes on the map this fall — and as a result, we’re going to sponsor girls’ education around the globe! If you’re not baking this November 1-8, there are still ways you can support the cause and our goal to raise $20,000.

We partnered with four fellow members of the Young Entrepreneur Council — Annie Wang, Windsor Hanger, and Stephanie Kaplan, who are the co-founders of Her Campus, and Rebecca Zorowitz, Partner/VP of Ooh La La Candy — brought these cupcake products to life!

At the Her Campus shop, you can order any of these 7 t-shirt shirts, all made by students who won our design contest. The shirts are $16 and She’s the First receives 100% of the profits (nearly $7 of each shirt).

She’s the First Partners with ChangeMyWorldNow.com

proud to be partnered with the new ChangeMyWorldNow.com!

At She’s the First, we’re always excited to join forces with other organizations and people who share our vision of making the world a brighter, better place. Enter Gina Otto, a children’s book author and founder of an amazing website called ChangeMyWorldNow.com. Gina’s site is the first content-driven, socially conscious, values-aligned social network designed to help young people (ages 10–14) learn how they can take action and make an impact.

With Gina and her dream team, we’re working to extend our mission and show younger boys and girls what it means to be a “first.” To help youngsters understand what a crucial role education plays in achieving goals and dreams, Gina and Co. have developed a special curriculum based off STF’s work. Kids can go on the website and participate in an exercise that prompts them to think about what they’ve been the first to achieve and how their schooling has made that possible. They’re also encouraged to share their stories and read other people’s, too.

One of the highlights is a PSA video (filmed by Emmy-Award winning producer Meredith Paige), starring our teen Special Correspondent & YouTube supporter, Alanna, aka @alannakalixo. We couldn’t have said it better than she does here.

Hop on over to ChangeMyWorldNow.com and share this fun opportunity with younger nieces, nephews, cousins, moms and friends.

STF*{Hofstra} Tie-Dying Cupcakes, Shirts AND Pancakes!

She’s the First*{Hofstra} found creative ways to get the word out about their sale ahead of time! Chapter President Chelsea Tirrell tells us how her team partnered with another student organization to get many students across campus involved in their sale.

Our founding members!

It has just been announced that She’s the First*{Hofstra} is now officially the client of Hoftstra University’s student-run public relations agency, PRestige. It’s come at just the right time. Do you know what this new partnership means? A few extra sets of hands and brains to make the first ever National Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off an immense success.

Though our chapter is looking forward to the donations from Naturally Nora, PRestige is already hard at work looking for donations from local bakeries and shops for goods or even tie-dye pastries of their own.

But their donation-searching doesn’t end there. As an organization, STF*{Hofstra} decided to have a tie-dye event the last week of October in order to launch the bake-off. “FREE” always draws thecrowd so PRestige set out to find t-shirts and tie-dying kits from different franchises.

In the midst of all this, we’ve been getting our club together and splitting them up into four groups – crafting, baking, publicity, and atrium tables. By splitting up the tasks, we’re able to work moreintimately and ultimately reach a successful end point without chaos.
It’s not just our club that’s looking to help the cause, though. After attending a mixer with other community service groups on campus, we were able to get another club, Young Republicans, to help bake. With as many hands as we have, we’re hoping to have copious amounts of cupcakes – and more cupcakes means more donations!

Some of our delicious cupcakes - yum!

We’ve even got a plan to make rainbow pancakes, charging $3 for a short stack and $5 for a tallstack. Tie-dye continues to come full circle and we’re willing to use any measure to help She’s the Firstreach its goal of $20,000.

Our organization has talents all across the board and we’re using them all. Our graphic designers are working on drawing up promotional flyers and design techniques, our publicists aregetting our name out there, and our organizers are working on keeping us above water. We even have drama/dance students who are willing to dress up as a cupcake to draw attention to our table in thestudent center! Together, we’re on the path to great things.

With October already well on it’s way and November just around the corner, it’s time to kick it into full gear. We’ve got our heads on straight and our eyes on the prize – now it’s time to get our feet (and hands!) moving. Ovens, here we come.

PR 101: How to Secure Bake-Off Media Coverage!

T-shirts are a G-R-E-A-T PR collateral tool to create buzz and awareness around campus.

We are excited to announce that 80 schools are participating nationwide in this year’s Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off, from New York to Honolulu, and internationally in Australia too! (Crikey that’s great, thank you Aussies!)

Another key ingredient to making the bake sale fundraiser a success is getting the word out to local media. In addition to the school newspaper, zone in on the top 5 to 10 newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations in your city. A couple STF ladies have already seen some great media success! Kelsey Thorn at Skidmore scored some sweet media coverage, along with Tehrene Firman from the University of Northern Iowa, who got this great hit. Let’s keep ‘em coming!

What’s the best way to go about media outreach? Well, here are some tips to help create buzz around these tasty tie-dyed treats.

5 Tips on How to Secure Press Coverage

  1. Add the sprinkles, make your pitch sparkle! Brainstorm on why your school’s bake-off has a cool factor. Is this the biggest fundraiser the school has ever done? Be sure to tweak the media alert template and include fun facts about your STF chapter. Editors sometimes like to run hi-resolution images with stories, so check the She’s the First website here for pictures of sponsored girls and other cool images that work well in articles too.
  2. Hit up Twitter-friendly media outlets. See which of the top 5-10 media outlets or outlet journalists and media are active on Twitter. You can also contact local key influencers who aren’t media. Ask these contacts to retweet the event linking to your Facebook page our website for additional info.  For tweets, be sure to include the hashtag #STFcupcakes
  3. Email the She’s the First media alert to local media. In this case, it’s best to reach out to the entertainment, lifestyle and food editors. If you’re unable to find the editor’s contact info online, give the outlet’s mainline desk a buzz. Once you’ve pulled together a media list of contacts, it’s always best to personalize the pitch and send information via email first, then follow-up via an email check in or phone call. Editors are normally on a tight deadline, so keep it short and sweet!
  4. Submit event info to online calendar listings. Most newspapers and other media also have online calendar listings. You can email the calendar listings contact directly, or in most cases, submit info through online submission form. This is a quick and easy way to get the event deets out.
  5. Write the article, then pitch the outlet. Instead of pitching story ideas, Alanna submitted her story to the Huffington Post and scored a fantastic article! For the journalism pros, step up the game and do the same–not only is it a great experience to test the waters as a contributing writer, aka “stringer,” but these hits are awesome clip examples when interviewing for internships and jobs.

But most importantly as always, have fun. Cheers!

Next Google+ Book Club: Half the Sky

We'll be discussing Half the Sky on November 14!

Since the inaugural She’s the First book club was such a success, we are moving on to round two! Please join us to discuss Half the Sky by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn on Monday, November 14, at 7 pm EST. We’ll be meeting via Google+, so tweet @shesthefirst with your gmail address to add you to the meetup, or email erinleigh.patterson@gmail.com. New to Google+? Not to worry! Check out more details here, and if you’re still feeling a little lost, just send me an email and I’ll make sure you know what to do.

“Half the Sky” is a journey through the developing world with two Nobel Prize winners seeking to understand the power held by women. By meeting women who have been trafficked into sex slavery or live and suffer with preventable diseases, the authors depict the world with an edge of anger but ultimately a view of hope. With a little help women all across the developing world are making a difference in their communities for their daughters. This issue of women’s emancipation, we learn, is not just the right thing to do, this is our best weapon in the combat on poverty.

Check the book out at your local library (or if you want, you can buy it here), and we’ll see you November 14th!

Be a Penpal with Kalkidan in Ethiopia!

Meet Kalkidan Girma, a 10-year-old girl in Ethiopia’s Selamta Family Project going into the third grade. She is currently being sponsored by Eliza, an amazing 8-year-old girl who donated her birthday money to girls’ education, and sent us a check in a envelope decorated with butterfly stickers!

Kalkidan finished third in her second grade class last year! We’re so excited to welcome her to the She’s the First family. She even knows already that she wants to be a teacher when she grows up!

Kalkidan came to Selamta four years ago with her brother Yohannes and sister Tigist after her father died. At Selamta she lives at the Minilik House with her eight Selamta siblings.

Kalkidan means “promise” in Amharic and with this sponsorship, She’s the First has promised Kalkidan an education. We’d love to hear some encouragement you have for Kalki as she starts third grade and then we’ll send all your comments back to her!

What was your favorite part of third grade? Do you remember a particular project or topic of study that inspired you? And take a look at her amazing report card. This girl is really going places!

Introducing the She’s the First*{Campus} Awards!

She’s the First*{Campus} is unveiling a new tradition for each end of the semester….CAMPUS AWARDS! These will honor three of the most successful chapters in these categories: Most Creative, Most Financially Successful, and Most Social.

Winners of these awards each semester will be highlighted on our homepage rotator, recognized on She’s the First Facebook page profile pic in the month of January, be featured in The Huffington Post, have a press release sent to their college/university, and receive a “Party in a Box” for your team to celebrate! The chapters will also be given a badge to place on their social media pages to show the world what they’ve accomplished! Each award is based on the criteria listed below:

Most Social:
To the most Twitterific/Facebook-friendly campus chapter of the season! Evaluated based on:

  • The size and/or growth of your social media following
  • The quality of your posts
  • The interaction with your supporters

At the end of the semester, campus chapters will receive a link to an official survey in which campus leaders can submit explanations of their best events, explaining why they think THEIR chapter deserves to win. Photos, videos, and posters from events are welcome additions to impress the judges, a panel from the She’s the First leadership team who will help decide the winner.

We’re very excited to start rolling out these new awards at the end of the semester, and hope to see great things from all of our chapters as they creatively change the world–and get competitive. Ready, set, go!

Kisa Project Strengthens Its Classroom Leaders

If you are clicking through the pages of She’s the First, then chances are you have something in common with us. We keep girls’ education at the forefront of the work that we do as researchers and team players, but we also know that for a girl to be educated well, she must have a strong teacher at the head of the class.

I admire the Kisa Project for their continued attention to detail in that area. They are not just raising scholars and future leaders from the school desks, they are always looking for ways to mold and morph the leaders they already have at the front of the classroom.

This year, AfricAid invited 18 teachers from among the five Kisa partner schools in Arusha and Monduli, Tanzania, to participate in the Teaching in Action workshop. The T.I.A. workshop is a great way for teachers to get the experience they need to bring leadership skills and stimulation to the classroom.

We cannot wait to see how this workshop benefits the Kisa girls in the future!

Meet the Most Generous Donor of the Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off!

In Naturally Nora's Princeton, NJ headquarters, Nora Schultz with The College of New Jersey student (and tie-dye cupcake bake sale organizer!) Jamie Primeau

Nora Schultz believes cupcakes can change the world because she’s seen the undeniable delight this dessert brings to others—especially children.

“Even if there’s no immediate, obvious financial change, you give (a child) a cupcake and the whole energy that comes from it is pure happiness,” Schultz said.

This Princeton resident is the mind behind Naturally Nora, a company that believes food should be made in a kitchen—not a laboratory.

With the help of her business partner and husband Steven, Nora sells all-natural scratch-in-the-box cakes.

Speaking of the upcoming She’s the First bake sales, she said, “You’re taking that (happiness) and attaching an actual financial component to it, which is more long-lasting. It’s just terrific. It’s a great combination.”

Nora is playing a major role in propelling the cause forward.

“We’re supporting the local bake sales—New Jersey and New York—with donations directly,” she explained. “I’d love to be able to send them to all the different sales, but what we’re going to do is pick one sale in particular and send enough mix to make 1,000 cupcakes. So it’s a lot of cake and frosting mix.”

The contest is going on now and for more details, click here! Continue reading

How Ithaca College’s Cupcake Team Overcame a Roadblock!

When Elizabeth Stoltz and her team signed up to host a Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off, they had no idea they couldn’t sell homemade cupcakes on their campus!  But these clever girls quickly found a way around the restriction and are going full speed ahead with their bake sale preparations.  Here’s how they triumphed:

Ithaca, New York is world famous for its tie-dye t-shirts that proudly boast, “Ithaca is Gorges!”  Here at Ithaca College, we hope to make tie-dye iconic for another reason – cupcakes!  My name is Elizabeth Stoltz and I’m a researcher for She’s the First as well as Founder & President of Food for Thought, a student organization at Ithaca College dedicated to improving the lives of children around the world.  Food for Thought is caught up in the cupcake sweetness sweeping the nation!

One of our promo flyers!

Immediately after declaring that Food for Thought would join the cupcake bake-off, we hit a roadblock.  We learned that Ithaca College doesn’t allow homemade baked goods to be sold on campus.  At first we were disappointed that our grand plans of baking and bonding into the wee hours of the night were dashed, but our setback quickly turned into a greater opportunity than we could’ve ever imagined!  We contacted Purity Ice Cream, the most beloved local ice cream shop and bakery in Ithaca, and asked them to lend us a hand…and a few hundred cupcakes.  Purity Ice Cream graciously agreed and went above and beyond the call of duty!  Food for Thought members will soon be taste-testing tie-dye cupcakes made from a special recipe specifically for the She’s the First cupcake sale!

A few members of our team

We’ve decided that we will use all proceeds from the cupcake bake-off to support a girl (or hopefully many girls!) at the Shanti Bhavan School in India.  However, we realize that $1,600 is an ambitious goal to raise solely through cupcakes.   We will be visiting local business asking them to help us “fill” our “recipe card.”  What I mean is that we took the sponsorship breakdown of a full year scholarship at the Shanti Bhavan School and made each component of the scholarship look like an ingredient on a recipe card.  We will ask sponsors to donate an “ingredient,“ like $240 to pay for housing or $55 for medical expenses, and supplement all corporate donations with cupcake sale revenues.  We will also be sending pre-order invites to Ithaca College faculty and staff.  We have a lot of other creative promotional ideas up our sleeves, so we can’t wait to get started selling cupcakes galore!

check out our cupcake flyers!

Last night, we spent our general body meeting decorating colorful cupcake Save-the-Date cards and will soon be canvassing campus with these sweet reminders!  We’re thrilled to have already generated so much community support and are so excited to make one girl’s future brighter through these tiny, bright cupcakes!
