If Your Birthday is Nov. 27-Dec. 4, Read This!

Becca Wertheim, the She’s the First campus chapter president at the University of North Carolina-Asheville, had a brilliant idea to help She’s the First gain more votes to win the American Giving Awards, so I asked her to share it with all of you! If your birthday falls on Nov. 27-Dec.4, we hope you’ll be inspired to follow her lead!

“My 21st birthday is on November 27th and I’m super excited. This year is a very special year for me not only because I’m turning 21, but also because my favorite organization is in the running to win one million dollars for girls’ education. When I found out that She’s the First was part of NBC’s American Giving Awards I was so happy, but when I found out that online voting begins on my birthday, I was stoked! I knew there had to be a way to use my birthday to get more votes.

Since American Giving Awards voting begins on November 27th, I want to celebrate my birthday on social media by promoting the contest to all my Facebook friends. When I think of birthdays I think of Facebook and how for that one day out of the year, you have so many people visiting your page. Every time someone posts on my wall, I’m going to reply back with a genuine “thank you” but also ask that they help me celebrate my BIG 21st by clicking the link and voting for She’s the First.

With just one click, friends and family can fulfill my birthday wish and potentially the wish of a girl in a developing country to receive an education. My hope is that all She’s the First supporters who have birthdays between November 27th and December 4th will join me in donating their birthday to She’s the First by kindly asking friends and family to vote!”

Interview with Lilian, Prefect at Kibera

Lilian, a first grader at Kibera, wants to be an artist when she grows up...we think she already is!

Lilian, a first grader at Kibera, wants to be an artist when she grows up...we think she already is!

And now, for the third and final installment of our introduction to the student leaders (see the first two here and here) at the Kibera School for Girls. As a quick refresher, Kibera recently started a new leadership program for its students. In it, the school calls on different first, second and third graders to serve as prefects, deputy head girls and head girls. Lilian, a first grader at Kibera, completed her term as prefect this year and I’m excited to introduce you to her. She may be young, but not for a second does she let that stand in the way of her ability to look out for and work with her peers. Between her desire to be an artist and her excitement in being a leader, she clearly channels creativity and confidence. I’m excited to see what Lilian accomplishes during her time at Kibera and beyond!

Can you tell us a little bit about your ‘typical day’ as prefect? What kind of responsibilities do you have?

When I am in class and the people are there, if they are making noise I tell them to keep quiet. If they are making noise, I tell them that they need to stop.

How do you work together with the deputy head girls and head girl?

I work with them – if somebody is misbehaving I take them to the deputy head girl and head girl.

What’s your favorite part of the prefect job?

My favorite part of the job is when people are making noise, then I take them to the teacher or headmistress.

What is the hardest part about being prefect?

When people are making noise, and I have to tell them to keep quiet and they make noise again.

If you had to give a piece of advice to next week’s prefect, what would you tell them?

I will tell her that I was the prefect and I want you to lead people nicely.

How did it make you feel to be selected prefect?

I felt happy and I was excited.

What did you learn about your school when you were prefect that you didn’t know before?

If someone is misbehaving, you should take them to the deputy head girl or head girl.

On top of being prefect, you have lots of classes to take too! What’s your favorite part of the school day?

My favorite part of the school year is the Summer Institute. My favorite subject is art. I like to draw and make dolls using lassos.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I want to be an artist.

Mark Your Calendar: Nov. 10 is Malala Day

If you’ve been following girls’ education news or this blog, I’m sure you’ve already heard of Malala Yousafzai. Her story has flooded the international news circuit, and people across the globe are realizing just how dangerous it can be to be a girl with a book. Many have stood up to speak against the violent actions of the Taliban and to carry on Malala’s voice for education rights while she recovers — perhaps none more so than Gordon Brown, the UN Special Envoy for Global Education. (You can read his views on the situation here.)

On November 10, Brown is calling for a day of action in honor of Malala, and he’ll be hand-delivering a petition to President Zardari of Pakistan asking him to lead governmental policy changes to protect the right to education for all the girls in his country. He’ll set up a timetable with the president to ensure real change happens — the change Malala and so many girls like her need so desperately in their home country.

So it starts here: One girl, one petition, one slow start to policy change. You can sign the petition at educationenvoy.org, like we did, and be part of the movement for girls’ education with all of us at She’s the First.

More Women in Office, More Girls in School!

Girls and women everywhere are forces for change! Photo from the Kibera School for Girls

Girls and women everywhere are forces for change! Photo from the Kibera School for Girls

As I watched the election results pour in Tuesday night, I couldn’t help but think of the happiness I shared with my She’s the First family across the country. We were witnessing so many firsts in our nation’s history – the first time a state elected an all-female Congressional delegation and Governor (good work New Hampshire!), the first openly gay U.S. Senator, Tammy Baldwin (also the first female U.S. Senator in Wisconsin!), the first Asian-American woman in Senate, Mazie Hirono (also the first female U.S. Senator in Hawaii!), the first Hindu in Congress, Tulsi Gabbard and Deb Fischer, Nebraska’s first female senator since 1954. We were watching history in the making. Issues critical to women dominated the headlines this election cycle, and voters responded by sending 20 female senators – the most this country ever has – to Washington.

Rallying around the “firsts” for females isn’t the only similarity I noticed between She’s the First and the elected female representatives. We’re well aware that educating girls leads to life-changing levels of empowerment and life-saving impacts like less sexual abuse and slavery, fewer child brides and improved health. A girl who receives an education is also more likely to earn a higher income, invest more in her family and send her children to school. Yet around the world, far less girls than boys are likely to finish school. Imagine what the world would be like if we unlocked ALL girls’ potential, and provided the support, funding, and environment they needed to thrive and grow in their communities as change-makers and world-shakers?

Today, women are not only underrepresented in classrooms around the world, but in decision-making roles as well. As we support girls’ education globally, we must also encourage women to seek positions of leadership. Despite the success of this year’s class of female candidates, the push for female representatives in office is hardly over. Did you know that the United States’ federal government ranks 78th in female representation worldwide? Though women comprise the majority of the nation’s population and voters, the number of female representatives in office remains disproportionately low.

One of the main reasons women don’t run for office is because no one ever suggested to them that they should. A study in 2011 found that because women are less likely to believe they’re qualified to hold office, the females who do run tend to be more effective, qualified and talented than the average male candidate. If you know a female who is a force for change, tell her. Show her that she can advocate for change that benefits her community, state or nation and shine as an example to girls everywhere, showing them that they too deserve to have their voice heard.

When we send women to office, we elect legislators who can offer a woman’s perspective and experience on issues of health, economic empowerment, education and the role of the U.S. in the world. Her voice transcends women’s issues; it can influence the nation as a whole. When you elect a female candidate, you are electing someone who is more likely to sponsor or cosponsor legislation, secure federal funding for her district and engage in collaborative leadership.

I’m thrilled to congratulate the women who have been elected to serve in the 113th Congress. Not only will they make tremendous contributions to our country, I’m positive their groundbreaking leadership will inspire generations of young girls and women to be leaders for years to come. The record-breaking must continue and it starts with you! Whether you know a girl who dreams of making a difference, or you yourself are that girl, your voice is valued and it is needed. When we value and uplift females as students, leaders and individuals, we change the world for the better.

Interview with Christian, Deputy Head Girl at Kibera

Check out Christian's deputy head girl pin!

Check out Christian's deputy head girl pin!

We’ve already written about the Kibera School for Girls’ new leadership program through the eyes of Natasha, a third grader who did a phenomenal job as head girl for the month. It was great to see all of the positive encouragement sent her way, and it makes me even more excited to introduce you now to Christian, a second grade student at KSG. As deputy head girl, Christian was also selected to lead her classmates for the month. She worked with that month’s head girl to help their fellow students follow the rules and shine as examples of respect and friendship. Like the deputy head girl, Christian was pleased to share her experience and deputy head girl observations through a speech presented to her classmates.

Christian dreams of defending those in Kibera through a law degree, and loves that being deputy head girl allowed her to make sure her classmates “love each other and help each other to do the work.” Read more about her experience being deputy head girl below!

Christian shares, in her own words, her experience being deputy head girl:

Can you tell us a little bit about your ‘typical day’ as deputy head girl? What kind of responsibilities do you have?

I behave well, I make sure the girls go to the hall when the come to school. I have them come with handkerchiefs, and to have good manners.

How do you work together with the head girl and prefects?

We love each other and we help each other to do the work.

What’s your favorite part of the deputy head girl job?

My favorite thing about being the deputy head girl is that the deputy head girl is the one who takes care of the school.

What is the hardest part about being deputy head girl?

Sometimes some people are hard to work with because they disturb you. They run in the hall when you tell them to stop it. And they fight and pour water along the corridor. Sometimes you get annoyed because they disturb.

If you had to give a piece of advice to the next deputy head girl, what would you tell them?

If somebody does not listen to them they need to find a way to make that person understand them.

How did it make you feel to be selected deputy head girl?

I was feeling happy because you were standing with the prefects.

What did/will you tell your classmates during your speech?

I said that they should have respect and obey the prefects and not to fight.

What did you learn about your school when you were deputy head girl that you didn’t know before?

I’ve learned that the deputy head girl has some challenges.

On top of being deputy head girl, you have lots of classes to take too! What’s your favorite part of the school day?

My favorite part of the day is when the girls behave well and do not disturb and not to give me challenges.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I want to be a lawyer to defend the people in Kibera.

Isn’t she cute? Did any of you have leadership roles when you were in grade school?
