She’s the First: LA Prepares for a Big Year Ahead!
[Editor's Note: This post was written by Rachael Datello of She's the First: LA, a city chapter of STF that holds fundraisers and awareness events on the West Coast. Want to get involved? Email us!]
It’s a new year and that means it’s time to come up with new fundraising ideas for 2012! Creative juices were flowing at the She’s the First: LA brainstorming session last week. Colleen Wormsley, an Ithaca College student, has joined the LA team while studying in the City of Angels for the semester, and her presence sparked our newest idea.
Here’s the plan: Our first fundraiser on March 18th will be geared toward college students like Colleen. We’ll hold a television and film industry panel for college students about to break into the entertainment industry—a huge demographic in LA. Panelists from all walks of the industry will be there to answer students’ questions and speak about their respective areas, giving tips for starting your career and advice for when you’re on the job.
That wasn’t the end of the brainstorm session, though. We thought about what might appeal to the LA lifestyle, and personally, I love the comedy community out here. It is everywhere! Everyone loves to laugh, so why not put on a comedy show? Right now there are a lot of options: improv, stand up, sketch comedy, or even a combination. All the details still need to be ironed out, but we’re planning on the end of April before Colleen heads back to the east coast. Emails have been sent and calls have been made, and now we just need to put all the pieces of the puzzle together and turn it into a stellar event. Updates to come as the event progresses!
Save the Date, Los Angeles!
It’s the first fundraiser for She’s the First on the West Coast! Please share with anyone you know in Los Angeles…stay tuned for upcoming blog posts with more info from the LA team. Follow them on Twitter @STF_LosAngeles!
"Likes for Learning": Could This Be Our First Girl Sponsored on FB?
Help us send a girl to school in Guatemala — one click from you contributes 50 cents to a sponsorship (without costing you a cent). It’s a small amount, yes, but it makes a difference. Haven’t you seen how fast things go viral among hundreds and thousands of people online? This will all add up!
All you have to do is ‘Like” the I Want Her Job Facebook page. I WantHerJob.com is a blog that profiles women who have fun, fulfilling jobs and how they got them. Here is the announcement about the campaign.
At She’s the First, we remind you that fundraisers for a girl’s sponsorship come in all sizes and styles, depending on where your talents and passions lie. For Brianne Burrowes, a leader of our She’s the First Los Angeles branch, that fundraiser was naturally via Facebook. She is a digital strategist by day at WONGDOODY in LA (profile here) and editor-in-chief of IWantHerJob.com blog by night. Of course, She’s the First wouldn’t have advocated a ‘Like’ campaign for just any brand…but IWantHerJob.com is directly aligned with the mission of She’s the First. Many “firsts” that we celebrate are those who attained dream jobs, and that’s exactly what IWantHerJob.com guides women to do.
Brianne’s idea for a Facebook “Like” fundraiser for She’s the First developed a few weeks before GAP announced their own holiday campaign to donate to a charity for every “Like” it received on a video…so we want to recognize Brianne for being so forward-thinking, congratulate her on launching her blog’s first non-profit campaign, and thank all the sponsors who made it possible.
The campaign runs from Dec. 13th to Dec. 17th — we encourage you to Share the page on your Facebook Wall too, encouraging others to join in — if we succeed and sponsor a girl in Guatemala, through partner Starfish One by One, you’ll all get to meet her on the blogs and Facebook.

She's the First Attends Girl Up Pep Rally in Los Angeles

I had a chance to speak with Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa about She's the First. I told him we just celebrated our first birthday! As someone with a young daughter himself, I feel he really understands the importance of our mission.
Last week, Girl Up held the Girl Up Pep Rally at Marlborough High School in Los Angeles, and I am honored to have represented She’s the First at the event! The Pep Rally featured a keynote by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, as well as appearances by Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa, Olympic gold medalist and swimmer Rebecca Soni, actress Amber Heard, singer David Archuleta, and actress and Special Envoy to the United Nations International Year of the Youth, Monique Coleman.

Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan
If you didn’t read about the Girl Up campaign when She’s the First attended its launch in NYC on October 1, here’s a quick refresher: Girl Up was created by the United Nations Foundation to address the needs of adolescent girls in developing countries. It prides itself on being a “for girls, by girls” campaign that mobilizes girls in the U.S. to raise awareness and funds to help other adolescent girls become educated, healthy, safe, counted and positioned to be the next generation of thought leaders.
To walk around and visit the various booths that drew attention to the more than 600 million adolescent girls living in developing countries who still struggle for the opportunity to go to school, see a doctor, or even be included in their communities, was humbling.
Some stats worth pointing out to She’s the First supporters (as our mission closely aligns with Girl Up):
- Less than half a cent of every development dollar goes to programs for girls, particularly those ages 10 to 14.
- Girls make up more than half of the 143 million out-of-school children and youth.
- One in every seven girls in the developing world are pregnant before the age of 15.
Monique Coleman put it best when she concluded the evening’s events by saying (and I’m paraphrasing), “You are not the future. You are the present.” So, join us in making our present count: Sponsor a girl!

Did you know that medical complications from pregnancy are the leading cause of death among girls ages 15 to 19 worldwide?

Girls were asked to send cards of inspiration to girls living in Liberia who have no health care, are often married by age 11, and who don't get the opportunity to go to school.

Girls were encouraged to visit five different booths -- Malawi, Guatemala, Liberia, Ethiopia, and the United States -- to write down one thing they can do to take action right now.
Los Angeles: Join Up with She's the First!
She’s The First is truly going global! We now have more than 1,700 fans on Facebook, 1,100+ Twitter followers, and just yesterday, we received our first email from a student in Japan asking us to speak at her TEDx event in Tokyo (we wish!). And now, across the US, young people outside New York City, where the organization was founded, are wanting to bring STF closer to home. For example, STF grad school intern Maisy Page i s planning a GIRLS WHO ROCK concert in April in Miami, and two young women in Los Angeles are hoping to bring STF’s message out west.
Rachael Datello, one of the founding members of STF, recently moved to LA to pursue a career in film. (This is fitting considering Rachael produced and directed the STF PSAs shot in New York and Boston!) Right around the same time, another young female in the Los Angeles area, Jill Irvin, inquired to STF about ways she could get more involved with our program. Jill had no direct connection to STF founders, but she discovered our group through various social media outlets and felt compelled to learn more. These two have now teamed up to bring She’s The First to the West Coast! If you are in Southern California and are interested in joining Rachael and Jill’s team, please feel free to contact them; email losangeles@shesthefirst.org
