Calling All Pretty Amazing Girls!

In September 2012, we saw a familiar face on the cover of Seventeen: Lindsay Brown, the She’s the First chapter president at the University of Notre Dame! She was selected for being a stellar student athlete for organized a tie-dye cupcake bake sale for She’s the First, which led her to visit the girls she sponsored in Nepal and then create a nonprofit to teach girls in developing countries how to play soccer and be confident on the field and in the classroom. To do all this, she had to quit the soccer team and forfeit her own academic scholarship. Pretty amazing.

It’s that time of year when Seventeen is once again on the search for its 2013 cover girl in the 3rd annual Pretty Amazing Reader Cover Contest. In this competition, Seventeen asks girls ages 15-22 who are talented, creative, and inspiring to share their story. The winner also gets a $10,000 scholarship!

Last year the spotlight was on empowering girls in the developing world. What other accomplishments can you share with Seventeen? How have you, or one of your friends, inspired others to be pretty amazing? Spread the word!

Submit your story to Seventeen in 1,000 words or less and upload two photos by April 30th, 2013. For more contest information and to enter click here. If you want us to put in a good word for you, just email our Founder/President Tammy Tibbetts, tammy@shesthefirst.org.

Now Watching ‘Pretty Amazing’ Seventeen.com Videos!

Walk by the newsstand. Pick up the October issue of Seventeen. You’ll recognize a face you’ve seen all over shesthefirst.org!

Lindsay Brown is the President of She’s the First*{Notre Dame} chapter and SEVENTEEN MAGAZINE’s cover girl!

As we found out last week, Lindsay won this year’s Pretty Amazing reader model cover contest, as a result of her genius idea to sponsor girls’ educations one tie-dye cupcake at a time and her powerful girls’ empowerment soccer program in Nepal!

Seventeen is a girl’s go-to magaizne for entertainment, fashion, and beauty, and it’s so refreshing to see them be bold in the media world by making one of their readers, a girl just like you or me, a super celebrity, for reasons that truly matter–having a big heart and dreams to change the world.

Seventeen captured Lindsay’s ‘Pretty Amazing’ journey on video. Check out some of our favorite episodes:

She’s the First*{Notre Dame} President is Seventeen Cover Girl!

CONGRATULATIONS to our Lindsay Brown, creator of the tie-dye cupcake fundraising craze and president of the She’s the First*{Notre Dame} chapter — out of 35,000 entries, she WON Seventeen‘s “Pretty Amazing” Reader Model Cover Contest!

Pick up the October issue of Seventeen ASAP to read about Lindsay and the four outstanding finalists: Chloe, Brittany, Kim, and Lindsay G., whom we admire for being “firsts” in their own incredibly impressive ways, from ballet to flying planes!

Thank you to the contest judges — Ann Shoket, Jared Eng, and Emma Roberts, and all the Seventeen readers who voted — for recognizing that Lindsay’s story can inspire millions of girls to take action for education equality worldwide.

Why is this cover so exciting?! Well,…

  1. It’s academic! Lindsay will receive a $20,000 scholarship (very well-deserved given that she’s spent so much of her own money traveling to Nepal…she also plans to go to Kenya over winter break, to implement her girls’ empowerment soccer program!).
  2. It’s bigger than one person. The girls Lindsay sponsors in Nepal — especially 13-year-old Hima — are going to flip out when they see their stories in the magazine, too! If this doesn’t prove to them that crazy dreams can come true, we don’t know what does! Lindsay also represents what it means to be a She’s the First*{Campus} leader, before a huge national audience of college-bound teens.
  3. It’s actionable. Most of all, any American girl who picks up Seventeen and says, “I want to be like Lindsay Brown!” can do just that, right now. None of us needs to wait to be the change we wish to see. Sign ups for our Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off movement in November have begun!

We congratulate you, Lindsay, and celebrate the work of you and your fellow She’s the First*{Campus} presidents across the U.S. do–there’s 35 of you now!

We also would like to recognize the founder of our Nepal partner school, Maggie Doyne…because without her, there would be no “Pretty Amazing” story, there would be no Hima to inspire this “girl effect.” We are humbled that we get to write the happy ending with all of you.

We Need Your Vote to Win the Oscar of the Non-Profit World!

News flash! We recently found out that we’re in the running to receive the “Most Creative Fundraiser by a Charity” Classy Award — and we need your vote (select the Eastern region) before July 26th! We received the nomination for our Tie-Dye Cupcake Campaign, which will be in full force again this November. Tie-dye cupcakes have made such an impact, in such a short amount of time — the campaign not only sponsored 48 girls in 8 developing world countries, but it has also inspired hundreds of students in the U.S. to be leaders and advocates for universal education. Over the next couple of weeks, the public will be encouraged to place votes in all categories. We have a couple suggestions for you!

In the EastShe’s the First (Most Creative Fundraiser By A Charity), The Adventure Project (Best New Charity, Disaster Relief And International Aid)

MidwestBright Pink (Most Creative Fundraiser By A Charity)

WestMama Hope (Most Effective Awareness Campaign By A Charity), KickStart International (Hunger and Poverty Relief)

Winners will be determined half by the number of votes their organization receives and half by an esteemed judging panel. The regional winners are revealed on July 31st (once again, we are the EAST!).

A Classy Award would be a huge honor for She’s the First to receive and undoubtedly attract more donors for girls’ sponsorships! There’s a very prestigious group of people lined up on the Leadership Council overseeing the Awards, so this recognition truly means a lot. People like Adam Braun (Founder and Executive Director of Pencils of Promise), Adam Garone (CEO & Co-Founder of Movember), and Jim Moriarty (CEO of Surfrider Foundation).

But I’m sure you’re wondering now…what happens next?!

Well, if we are chosen as a Regional Winner, we will then move onto the National Judging round. (August 1-September 20) In this round, the Leadership Council will work together to determine 16 national winners. Then on September 22nd, comes the most anticipated moment of all time… the announcing of the winners at the Classy Awards in San Diego, California!

So, if we win, what are some of the prizes? We’d get some of these pretty cool fundraising benefits and the recognition will definitely help us attract more donors/sponsors for girls’ education! We’re crossing our fingers for this huge opportunity!

Remember to vote She’s the First for the “Most Creative Fundraiser by a Charity” category! You can also show your support by tweeting about our nomination, and letting everyone know to vote.

She’s the First Partners with ChangeMyWorldNow.com

proud to be partnered with the new ChangeMyWorldNow.com!

At She’s the First, we’re always excited to join forces with other organizations and people who share our vision of making the world a brighter, better place. Enter Gina Otto, a children’s book author and founder of an amazing website called ChangeMyWorldNow.com. Gina’s site is the first content-driven, socially conscious, values-aligned social network designed to help young people (ages 10–14) learn how they can take action and make an impact.

With Gina and her dream team, we’re working to extend our mission and show younger boys and girls what it means to be a “first.” To help youngsters understand what a crucial role education plays in achieving goals and dreams, Gina and Co. have developed a special curriculum based off STF’s work. Kids can go on the website and participate in an exercise that prompts them to think about what they’ve been the first to achieve and how their schooling has made that possible. They’re also encouraged to share their stories and read other people’s, too.

One of the highlights is a PSA video (filmed by Emmy-Award winning producer Meredith Paige), starring our teen Special Correspondent & YouTube supporter, Alanna, aka @alannakalixo. We couldn’t have said it better than she does here.

Hop on over to ChangeMyWorldNow.com and share this fun opportunity with younger nieces, nephews, cousins, moms and friends.

Reflecting on the First Year of College

Steph with her mom (and #1 role model!) at a New York Women in Communications event - Steph is a two-time NYWICI Foundation scholarship winner.

As anyone who has followed us since the beginning knows, She’s the First started in November 2009 with a solitary mission — to sponsor girls’ education in the developing world. However, in the process of fulfilling that mission, we saw that we also had the unique opportunity to drive involvement, leadership, and experience among students in the U.S., as they fundraise, sponsor, and often visit their counterparts in various countries. We now have a double-edged mission!

Stephanie Guzman, who just finished her freshman year at the City College of New York, is one of those extraordinary students paying it forward and learning so much in the process. Since she goes to college in NYC, she volunteers at the big She’s the First-hosted events — GIRLS WHO ROCK and the She’s the First Soiree last November 1st. She’s used her communications skills to obtain donations from a former employer and major companies like Steve Madden.

We are so proud of Steph and honored that She’s the First could spark that ah-ha moment that totally changed her career path! Check out the column she wrote for her campus newspaper this past June.

Channel One Viewers: Want to Be Jancy’s Pen Pal?

In classrooms across the country, CBS’ Channel One News aired a segment about She’s the First for Women’s History Month! Tammy Tibbetts talked about how students who don’t have dollars to donate can still make an impact by corresponding with the girls we sponsor. Emails are pouring in from students asking where they can begin…it starts here!

To refresh your memory, here is the segment, framed by Jancy’s story and how education transformed her life:

Now here is part of an essay Jancy wrote about her life in India. It was published in The Huffington Post today! This is your task, Channel One viewers! Read Jancy’s story and then in the comments of this blog post, write back with a question, and tell her what your dream is, what your school day is like, or what your family is like. We will send her your notes, publish her response, and then email you when you can leave your next round of comments. Maybe a new friendship will form!

My name is Jancy. I am 16. My mom is a single parent and I have two older brothers. I was born in a small village in the Hassan district of the Karnataka state, in India.

When I was three and a half, I joined Shanti Bhavan, a non-secular residential school for socially and economically disadvantaged children. Shanti Bhavan is a unique institution, where we are given not only a quality education, but taught globally shared values, such as humility, generosity, and acceptance. Joining Shanti Bhavan was perhaps the most significant, life-changing event in my life.

I have stayed at Shanti Bhavan for almost 13 years now, and it is like my second home. Here, I have the biggest family ever; we are all bound by our love for one another. There is something about Shanti Bhavan that is special — almost divine — and difficult to express in words.

Shanti Bhavan is a part of me. Sometimes, I wonder how I am going to handle it when I wake up one morning and realize I have graduated.

After all, it is here that I have learned everything from the alphabets in the English language to the literature of Shakespeare. It is here that I received my first toothbrush, my first warm bed, and my first shampoo. It is where I tasted pancakes for the first time.

All of the students at school are taken care of by our housemothers. Our teaching staff is comprised of Indian teachers, as well as volunteers from various parts of the world and all walks of life, who greatly enrich our education and broaden our perspectives.

We are taught from a very early age not to discriminate against one another. We respect all religions and are free to practice our own. We have the freedom to voice our own opinions. And, furthermore, we are asked to have opinions on world issues.

I am almost a senior now, and grateful to everyone at Shanti Bhavan who continues to inspire me each day to move forward. I am studying Accounting, Economics, and Commerce and preparing to take the ISC exam next year, considered among the most challenging in India.

To me, education is the key to the many doors I want to open. I want to be the first girl in my family to go to college. I want to get my Master’s degree. I want to combine the fields of business and fashion someday. I want to find success to improve the status of my family. I want to continue the Shanti Bhavan dream.

Ready, set, comment! :)

Our Tanzanian Kisa Scholar Becomes a Huffington Post Author!

As you may have seen from our proud tweets and Facebook posts, one of the Kisa Scholars in Tanzania, sponsored by GIRLS WHO ROCK, is now a published author! Elizabeth David was featured in The Huffington Post‘s Greatest Person series on Friday, publishing her own words about education and her role models. Check it out here!

She’s the First commends our partner AfricAid, and especially its Founder/Executive Director Ashley Shuyler, for creating a technology program like The Kisa Project that makes achievements like this possible!

Below is a chain of emails where we tell Elizabeth about her published article and her reply. Please leave a comment or question for Elizabeth (she asks about your hobbies!) — we will send this to her in our next email exchange!

Hi Elizabeth!

I have some VERY exciting news for you!! Are you ready? You are now officially a published author! The Huffington Post loved your essay and published it online on Friday. (this is one of the biggest news websites in the US) I took a picture of how it looks on the computer screen to show you too – it is front and center on the page! I showed this to Ashley, and her mom Nina, too, and they are incredibly proud also. Everyone at She’s the First is! Most importantly, I think you mom will be VERY proud. What a special recognition you gave to her, and we know she must be a great woman to have raised you.

I wanted to tell you more about The Huffington Post – it is named after Arianna Huffington, the founder, one of the most influential women in the media industry. Arianna is an authority in the media and politics world, with many achievements, but the one that I admire the most is the book she published called “On Becoming Fearless….in Love, Work and Life.” She writes, “But you have to do what you dream of doing even while you’re afraid.” The GIRLS WHO ROCK team relates to this a lot, because that concert was – and continues to be – something we try to bring to life from our dreams. We believe “Music is Universal, so Education Should be Too”—and we think people can have fun while changing the world. So that is what we are trying to do, and even though there is room for failure, we stay determined. Arianna’s book is very inspiring, and one that we think the Kisa Scholars would all love and learn from, so I’m going to send a copy over to you – the volunteers traveling to Arusha in May should be able to bring it! (The She’s the First and GIRLS WHO ROCK team wishes we could come on this trip, but we aren’t able to travel at the time, since it’s right before the concert – but we do very much hope to visit you and Tanzania. I know it will happen someday!)

What is a rally competition and Arsenal? Tell us more, it sounds like fun! [a reference to her last message]

Thanks for all your letters, Elizabeth, and for sharing your thoughtful words to all of us. Your writing helps us all see how we can become leaders and set a good example for others, and proves that education makes anything possible!

Love from She’s the First!
______________________________________________

I’m so very happy about the news you gave me. You really made my day.Thank you so much for the book that you’ll be sending me,I love reading books and I’m sure I will love the book.

A rally competition is a car racing competition and arsenal is one of the biggest football club in England.I love arsenal because it has many of my favourite players.

How was your weekend? What do you like to do for fun or your hobbies?I must say one of the things I enjoy doing is writting and hearing from you guys.I must be very lucky to have you guys as my sponsors.

With lots of love,
Elizabeth.

DIY World Improvement Radio Show Features She’s the First!

A couple weeks ago, we had the pleasure of being one of the first guests on the new radio show “DIY World Improvement,” created by Cathy Carlozzi. Cathy is a communications pro with nearly 30 years of experience, with a specialty in speech writing. She serves on the New York Women in Communications Foundations Board, along with our President/Founder Tammy…Tammy and Executive Director Christen Brandt both received NYWICI Foundation scholarships in college (it’s how they met, before She’s the First was even a sparkle in the eye!). We are honored to be part of this interview not only because we’ve known Cathy for several years now, but more importantly, because we are big believers in “DIY World Improvement” — if you want to see change in the world, you’ve gotta be it!

Below you can listen to the full interview, in parts. Part 1 features Tammy and Part 2 features the wonderfully articulate and passionate She’s the First Ambassador Kaitlin Davis, along with tireless leader Ajit George, US director of our India partner school, Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project.

She’s the First Wins FIRST in Vivanista Video Contest!

As many of you know, She’s The First*{Syracuse} entered a video in Vivanista’s “Parties For a Purpose” contest. We were thrilled when we learned that we were one of the top 5 finalists, and on Saturday, even bigger news was announced: WE WON!

This is a victory for all She’s The First supporters. Our video received more than 6,000 votes, thanks to so many of you voting each and every day of the contest, and telling your friends to do the same. By posting the link to Vivanista’s voting page on Twitter, Facebook, and other social networking sites, you helped the word spread like wildfire.

We are so grateful to have won the $1,000 prize, and we plan to put 80% of the money toward girls’ sponsorships in a program from the She’s the First directory (we’ll decide which ones when She’s the First*{Syracuse} holds our first meeting of Spring semester, and we’ll keep you posted!). We’ll also reinvest 20% into an STF fundraiser at Syracuse University that raises more than $200 to send even more girls to school.

So thank YOU for using the power of social media to lead us to victory and help us transform girls’ lives!

She's the First & Our AfricAid Scholar Elizabeth in Medley Magazine!

At the #CelebrateSTF Tweetup yesterday, we were pleased to meet Kirsten Acuna, who just finished up finals at Syracuse University and returned to Manhattan (in the nick of time for Tweetup!). Earlier in the semester, she had interviewed Tammy Tibbetts & Christen Brandt about how She’s the First got started, and wrote/published a feature story in the campus’ Medley Magazine. The magazine, of which she was editor-in-chief, is dedicated to stories about international affairs and cross-cultural exchange, and we are honored to be included! Our two-page spread featured a very special girl who inspires us all — Elizabeth David, the first student we sponsored in AfricAid’s Kisa Project program, in Tanzania. (We also sponsor Elizabeth & Grace!)

For college students, reaching out to the campus newspaper, TV show, radio station, or magazines is an easy way to spread awareness of She’s the First’s call to sponsor girls’ education. We recently blogged about She’s the First*{Manhattan} doing just this with their college paper. Very proud of all our college supporters this semester — thank you for your impact!

She’s the First & GIRLS WHO ROCK Make the Cover of Glitter Magazine!

Fall 2010 issue of Glitter, a magazine for teen girls -- the cover story features She's the First, GIRLS WHO ROCK, and Vita Chambers!

She’s the First just experienced another “first’” this week — we can hardly believe it! Our campaign (fueled by your passion!) and our first GIRLS WHO ROCK benefit concert in New York City (was on June 10, during Internet Week New York) made the cover story of Glitter, a magazine for teen girls!

Editor-in-chief Nikki Fowler attended GIRLS WHO ROCK with her teen reporters. Adding in the images of She’s the First staff photographer Kate Lord, they published a beautiful 6-page spread featuring an interview with performer Vita Chambers and a recap of the night. One of our teen fundraisers, Mackenzie Olson, was even profiled on page 53 in the “real people” section, giving advice to her peers on how to sponsor a girl!

Special congrats to Vita Chambers, who is currently rocking out with Justin Bieber on tour, on her first big cover too!

You can flip through the magazine in Flash here — let us know what you think! And we’re already planning GIRLS WHO ROCK 2011 in New York City, so feel free to share any ideas.

Thank you, Glitter!

Thanks for the Shout-Out, Kelli!

Singer Kelli Pyle - rising star in Brooklyn, NY!

Singer Kelli Pyle - rising star in Brooklyn, NY!

We’re pumped that New York singer Kelli Pyle mentioned she’s excited to work with the She’s the First campaign when she was interviewed on Long Island’s WLIU Radio March 6th! Kelli is a singer/songwriter with Midwestern roots and she’s about to make it big in NYC — she’s already shared the stage with Alicia Keys and John Legend! We love her soulful R&B voice and just downloaded her debut album on iTunes.

You can listen to the She’s the First shout-out by clicking on the link below. I’ve edited the clip down to a 10-minute portion of the broadcast, where you’ll first hear Kelli’s song “Drive,” and then some Q+A where she talks about how she plans to give back…by working with She’s the First! We can’t wait to meet her this month and start planning an upbeat way for you all to support She’s the First through music this summer.

Click here to listen to Kelli sing & plug She’s the First on the radio!
