How to Win Free Cupcake Mix for Your Bake Sale

Our Second Annual Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake Off is less than ONE month away!

Naturally Nora and She’s the First want you to be as prepared as can be to “Bake a Change,” so we have some exciting news. For the second year in a row, Nora, the creator of all-natural cupcake mix Naturally Nora, has graciously offered to donate 12 boxes of cake mix AND 12 boxes of frosting to THREE winning teams! (That makes 200 cupcakes!)

This Naturally Nora contest will run for 2 weeks, starting October 17th and ending on Halloween, October 31st.

The amazing detail is that there are two ways to enter: You will automatically be in the running if you have signed up to host a bake sale OR by getting a friend to sign up!

Here’s how you can enter:

1. Sign up HERE to host your own bake sale this November 12-18

2. Recruit a friend to sign up (just make sure they put your name down in the field that asks how they heard about the Bake-Off!)

The more people you get to sign up, the greater your chances of winning! Use Twitter and Facebook as platforms to encourage your friends to sign up.

Here’s a tweet you can send out:

Help me win @NaturallyNora cake mix for my @shesthefirst bake sale by hosting one too! Sign up at http://www.shesthefirst.org/cupcakes

Extra! Extra! STF Wins Campus Media Group PSA Contest!

When fellow campus coordinator, Casey, and I were brainstorming our goals for She’s the First*{Campus} this summer, we decided to encourage every campus chapter to get published in their college newspaper. After all, how many times do we see students flipping through the school paper in the dining hall, checking out the result of the last sports game, filling out the crossword, or looking for what’s new on campus?

Turns out Campus Media Group was 10 steps ahead of us! Each year, Campus Media Group, “the college marketing experts,” select one non-profit organization with an important message for college students to publicize through a PSA contest. This year’s winner is…drum roll, please…She’s the First!

So what exactly does this mean for She’s the First*{Campus}? Campus Media Group will work with the 1,800 college newspapers that the agency represents, asking them to donate ad space for the She’s the First PSA at least once this year. That exposure in print and online in all the big campus publications is worth an estimated $100,000 in free advertising! She’s the First*{Campus} has been growing fast this year and we KNOW that this publicity will help us explode and reach out to excited college students across the country. We are so honored that Campus Media Group chose us for this opportunity and can’t wait to keep the STF community posted on what our final PSA looks like and the response we get from schools across the country!

Want more information on the Campus Media Group PSA contest? Check out their blog post about it here.

Thinking about starting your own chapter of She’s the First*{Campus} at your college or high school? Apply here! Send any questions to campus@shesthefirst.org.

Congrats, She’s the First, and thank you, Campus Media Group!

Contest: Design Cupcake T-Shirts to Help Sponsor Girls!

At school, t-shirts are so much more than work-out clothes – they are billboards for the organizations you belong to, and occasionally, they brag about epic achievements like finishing a marathon or winning the state championship. But t-shirts can also represent causes you care about, unify a team, and their purchase can make a priceless difference in a girl’s life. The She’s the First Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off t-shirts will do all this…and you will be involved in creating them!

one of the shirt templates you can design!

HerCampus.com and She’s the First are hosting a t-shirt design contest for the cutest, coolest cupcake illustrations…download the templates from HerCampus.com (starting Wednesday, August 24) and design in full-color on the front of the shirt. You have two weeks to doodle (Illustrator/Photoshop files preferred) and upload your entry as a JPG to www.hercampus.com/cupcakes-contest. Her Campus readers and She’s the First fans will vote on their favorites, and the top 7 will be printed on t-shirts to be sold online, leading up to the Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off on Nov. 1-8! Best part: 100% of the profits from these shirts will go to the sponsorship fund, sending girls to school who otherwise could not afford their chance in the classroom.

"Change the World" pillow from PBTeen, which the 7 winning illustrators get!

You’ll also win a “Change the World” pillow from PB Teen — because that’s exactly what you’re doing! Winning entries will be determined by popular vote and by judging of Her Campus’s Creative Director and Co-Founder Annie Wang and, all the way from India, 12th grader Jancy, whom She’s the First sponsored in 2010 at the Shanti Bhavan school—she’s the top art student!

Ready? Set…go!!!

p.s. Why tie-dye? Read this inspiring story about the cupcake that started it all!

Update on We Media PitchIt! Contest for $25,000

A few weeks ago, we asked our supporters to rally the troops and vote for us in the We Media Pitch It! Challenge, a contest in which finalists present their start-up ideas at the WeMedia conference for the chance to win a $25,000 grant. When the voting was over, we placed third overall, and first in the not-for-profit category — all thanks to you, our supporters! We were sure this would mean we were finalists in the challenge, since we were led to believe that votes would be a major deciding factor.

Today, everyone who voted in the competition received an email announcing the nine ideas chosen as finalists, and unfortunately, She’s the First was not among them. While we were disappointed to learn this, we were even more concerned that we had appealed so strongly to you to vote for us, when the votes had little to no effect on which ideas were chosen as finalists. So to those of you who voted,  here’s our new promise and lesson learned: She’s the First will not ask for your vote in the future unless unless it is a contest where votes alone determine the winner or finalists.

Coming up: A pool party to support nonprofits!

But for now, we’ll wish the other contestants and finalists the best of luck, and shake off the bad news with some good!

• Did you know? The first congresswoman of the United States, Jeannette Rankin, began serving her first term on March 3, 1917.

• We were featured in the Huffington Post today, as part of the “Greatest Women of the Day” series for Women’s History Month!

• We’re going to a pool party and we want you to come with us! Prime Produce (remember them from the prom last September? We raised over $600 that night!) is holding another fundraising event, and half of the ticket sale goes to the not-for-profit of the attendee’s choice. Save the date for March 12, and keep an eye out for more details, coming soon!

Attention Colleges: Vivanista’s Newest Fundraiser Contest is For You!

We’re thrilled to announce a new contest that Vivanista is sponsoring, and if you’re a college student, you’re not going to want to miss this!

You may remember that our Syracuse University chapter won Vivanista’s “Parties With a Purpose” in January. The women at Vivanista enjoyed the video entry and promotional campaign for the video so much, that they’ve invited She’s The First to play a prominent role in their latest contest: Flash FUNdraising.

Here’s the deal: 20 selected college campuses across the country will hold major fundraisers throughout the weekend of April 15-17, with the help of a microgrant from Vivanista (some seed money to produce their fundraiser). Campus organizations at each school will compete to raise the most money, and the winning school will receive $1,000 for a charity of the students’ choice.

Additionally, Vivanista is awarding three other prizes for Most Creative Fundraiser, Greatest Social Impact, and Best Event Video.

It gets better: Vivanista has selected She’s The First as a recommended non-profit beneficiary! (That is, if the winning school isn’t sure where they’d like to donate their winnings, Vivanista will suggest STF as one of five deserving organizations.)

Want to get involved? Check out the timeline below and start working on the first step: Applying for a microgrant at vivanista.com. Be sure to keep She’s The First in the loop on your school’s progress; we’ll promote you right here on the blog!

  • Launch: Week of February 28th
  • Grant application period: March 1st – 30th
  • Seed funding distribution : 1 Week prior to the event
  • 48 Fundraiser Weekend: April 16th – 17th
  • Winner of the Highest Funds Raised Award Announced: April 18th, 2011
  • Voting for three awards begins: April 18th
  • Winners of other three awards announced: April 25th, 2011

Good luck!

Your Vote Could Help Partner Starfish One by One Win $1,000

Mayra and her mother

Mayra and her mother

She’s the First encourages young women to use their talents to creatively fundraise to sponsor girls’ education worldwide. Sammy Davis held a vintage clothing sale, six talented musicians lent their voices to GIRLS WHO ROCK, and a cupcake-baking frenzy has begun! So when I saw that Vivanista was having a photo contest that would donate $1,000 to the winner’s charity of choice, I decided to enter one of my photos from our recent #STF360 trip to Guatemala.
I chose this photo of Mayra and her mother, Eusebia, because it reminds me of the domino effect that educating a girl can have on her family and community. Not only is 16-year-old Mayra benefiting from the education and weekly mentoring she receives from Starfish One by One, but her mother is learning and growing, too.

If I get the most votes, I will send the money to our partner in Guatemala, Starfish One by One. But I need your help. Vote here everyday through February 14 to be a part of this sponsorship – I can’t do it without you!

We also get an additional vote every time someone “likes” the photo on Facebook.
With $1,000, Starfish can pay for 4 years of a girl’s education or 2/3 of the cost of a year of mentoring for a group of 15 girls.

Thanks for your help! Let’s do this together!

Enter DoSomething.org's 60-Second Video Contest — Talk About Your Work for She's the First!

Enter DoSomething.org's latest contest!

Show off your She's the First grassroots action in DoSomething.org's video contest with Clean & Clear!

We like DoSomething.org around here. Not only is it a thriving platform for youth 25 and younger who are changing their communities locally and globally, but it’s a non-profit that has awarded major grant money to members of the She’s the First network! Last year, Maggie Doyne, representing Nepal in our directory with her Kopila Valley Children’s Home, won the coveted $100,000 DoSomething Award to build her school…which opened this month!

This year, Jessica Posner, founder of the Kibera School for Girls and the Shining Hope Community Center — representing Kenya in the She’s the First directory — won $10,000 as one of the five finalists for the DoSomething Award — she may win $100,000 too on July 19 when the Awards air on VH1!

Now, with Clean & Clear and singer-actress Demi Lovato, DoSomething.org has a new challenge called Join the Surge.” In 60 seconds, YOU can be a part of it AND represent She’s the First!

Here’s what to do: Record a 60-second video on how you are making a difference, such as by sponsoring a girl in the She’s the First network. Or, if you didn’t fundraise for a sponsorship, maybe you mentored girls in you community offline, and raised awareness about girls around the world online. Maybe you traveled to another country and volunteered to help impoverished families and their daughters. The possibilities are endless!

Submit the video here between now and September 15. The first 1,000 entries receive a free bracelet! The winner will fly into NYC to watch Demi perform live in concert, and more importantly, the video will air on VH1, bringing so much visibility to She’s the First and the power of girls’ education worldwide!
