#CharityTuesday: Arts & Crafts Time!
For this #CharityTuesday, we want to share with you some of the fun times students around the world are having with art!
Check it out:
Your Vote Could Help Partner Starfish One by One Win $1,000

Mayra and her mother
She’s the First encourages young women to use their talents to creatively fundraise to sponsor girls’ education worldwide. Sammy Davis held a vintage clothing sale, six talented musicians lent their voices to GIRLS WHO ROCK, and a cupcake-baking frenzy has begun! So when I saw that Vivanista was having a photo contest that would donate $1,000 to the winner’s charity of choice, I decided to enter one of my photos from our recent #STF360 trip to Guatemala.
I chose this photo of Mayra and her mother, Eusebia, because it reminds me of the domino effect that educating a girl can have on her family and community. Not only is 16-year-old Mayra benefiting from the education and weekly mentoring she receives from Starfish One by One, but her mother is learning and growing, too.
If I get the most votes, I will send the money to our partner in Guatemala, Starfish One by One. But I need your help. Vote here everyday through February 14 to be a part of this sponsorship – I can’t do it without you!
We also get an additional vote every time someone “likes” the photo on Facebook.
With $1,000, Starfish can pay for 4 years of a girl’s education or 2/3 of the cost of a year of mentoring for a group of 15 girls.
Thanks for your help! Let’s do this together!

STF Bracelets in Atlanta with Asha Patel & lululemon athletica
When I heard about the She’s the First fundraiser at lululemon in Atlanta, I thought, ‘Yoga, jewelry, and it is all for a great cause…How could there be a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon?’ I headed over to the historic Marietta Square in my athletic gear with my camera by my side, ready for a fun time. This event and everyone involved were all amazing! All of the staff at lululemon were excited to be helping out She’s the First which was so exciting.
I got to meet Asha Patel, one of the organizers of the event and she had her beautiful magenta and teal ‘She’s the First’ bracelets with her, along with some other pieces from Asha Patel Designs. Being a jewelry lover, of course I had to pick up one of the bracelets. I am so lucky to have met Asha, she is an amazing person doing work worldwide for those in need. I was excited to find that we have many interests in common; our love of helping others, making jewelry, and travelling to name a few.

a She's the First info session and benefit bracelet sale at lululemon in Marietta, Georgia, Feb. 5th
The highlight of my day was doing yoga with Asha and the lovely ladies of lululemon. Asha spoke movingly about She’s the First at the beginning of our yoga session and our instructor Isabelle Casey ended our session on the same note. There was a great turn out at lululemon, we almost overflowed the room where we did our yoga! I had such a wonderful time meeting everyone and spreading word about She’s the First. I wish every Saturday could be like this one.
If you missed the Marietta event and you would like to have your very own Asha Patel signature ‘She’s the First’ bracelet, don’t worry! You can find them on her website ashapateldesigns.com. For every bracelet, 20% goes to She’s the First…now that’s what I call fashionable philanthropy.
Thank you so much to the organizers and all who attended; especially Asha, lululemon, Isabelle, and my dear friend Maisy, a She’s the First Researcher who told me about this event!

#CelebrateSTF December Documentary Tweetup Photos!
She’s the First’s December Documentary Tweetup with Girl Scouts of the USA (@girlscouts) was a success! For a week of holiday parties and final exams, we actually had a full house of just over 30 participants! We enjoyed speakers from 10×10, who discussed their documentary projects around the world and their goals for spreading the word about girls’ education. The Girl Scouts spoke about their international initiatives, and I spoke with STF members Tammy Tibbetts and Cynthia Hellen about our travel series STF360 and how it’s developing as a tool to attract the public’s interest in the stories of girls around the world. Look for videos to come, but here are some photos I took!

The Complete She's the First Soiree Photo Gallery!
Photographers Kate Lord and Marc Hall (with assistance from Leah Konen and Elyssa Marcus) published their photos from the She’s the First Soiree to Flickr. Do you see yourself? Check ‘em out!
It's Not a Party Without Hats!

[Editor's Note: This is a guest post from She's the First Soiree volunteer Leah Konen, an associate editor at elledecor.com. She was the first in her family to become a journalist. She also ran the first photo booth at a She's the First event -- and it won't be the last!]

The She’s the First Soiree was a huge hit, from the cupcakes to the dance numbers, the raffle prizes to the brand-new She’s the First bracelets, and—of course—the hats.
She’s the First supporters donned everything from the classic birthday hats to super-fun, old-school chapeaus loaned by Sammy Davis Vintage (think a circa 1990 wide-brimmed flower hat a la Blossom) to a ridiculous cowgirl hat complete with yellow pigtails. From behind the camera of our first-ever photo booth, I got the chance to catch everyone’s silly, pretty faces, including spectacular GIRLS WHO ROCK songstresses, Shontelle and Cara Salimando.
It reminded me of one of the many reasons why I love She’s the First. It’s a chance to do the things we love already (i.e. fantabulous photo shoots), and, at the same time, help out girls worldwide.
Proceeds from the photo booth and the raffle helped us sponsor a girl at Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project. If you didn’t get a chance to print your photo on Monday, you can head over to photographer Kate Lord’s web site to download. Each one is $5 (same price as at the event) and all proceeds still go to Shanti Bhavan!
Purchase images here! 100% of the proceeds benefit Shanti Bhavan!
I've Been Soiree'd!
Our one-and-only FIRST birthday is less than 2 weeks away! We want everyone, regardless of whether they live in NYC, to celebrate, not only to recognize all that we accomplished with you in one year (30+ sponsorships!), but more importantly, our future — and how it will impact girls around the world. So why not throw a big party on Facebook? To make our enthusiasm blatantly obvious, we started fooling around with our Facebook profile pictures on the free photo editing site Picnik.com. First, our President Tammy altered hers by adding a cone hat and text reading “She’s the First Soiree: Nov. 1, NYC.” Then Director Christen Brandt followed. Then our Researcher Maisy Page. Then our Photographer Kate Lord…now who will be next?
Have you ever started a viral Facebook trend? Well, then make this your first, whether or not you live in NYC and can attend the Soiree — because we are celebrating WORLDWIDE! Go to Picnik.com (no registration needed), and upload a photo. Then click on the “Create” tab. Click on Stickers in the navigation bar. Scroll down to “New Years” stickers in the lefthand column. Drag and drop it on your photo, add Text next, Save, Upload to Facebook — and voila! You’ve been Soiree’d. Tag She’s the First in a status update so we can check it out!
If you want us to do the work for you, just send a photo in to info@shesthefirst.org, and we’ll send you back your pic all ready for Facebook upload.
There’s a reason the word FUN is in fundraiser, right?
