Kibera School Takes First Place in National Poetry Competition

Teacher (and poet!) Julia Alubala and her award-winning students!

I’ve never been prouder of the young students at the Kibera School for Girls at Shining Hope for Communities in Kenya – and that’s quite a statement! Earlier this month, the pre-K class was honored with the first place title for their performance in Kenya’s National Poetry competition for their stirring recital of “Wings to Fly.” Their performance will be broadcast on national television and the girls will perform at the State House in front of President Kibaki. The poem, written by their teacher Julia Alubala, is one of inspiration and hope – it tells of the girls’ desire to soar above poverty and hunger into a better life filled with learning and love.

In light of the girls’ phenomenal performance, KSG’s Headmistress Anne Olwande said, “State house, here we come, next time White House! Nothing can be our limit, not even the sky. The power of positive thinking!” Twenty-four young girls took part in the national level of the competition, with 12 from pre-K and kindergarten in the winning group. Twelve others from grades 1-3 were awarded 8th place in the national competition.

Watch the video below and it’s quite clear that the girls’ performance is deserving of national (and now international!) accolades. I guarantee their rendition will leave you with goose bumps. Send your congratulations to the girls and Teacher Julia by leaving a comment on their Facebook page!

“We want to fly
give us the wings
Give us love, hope, education
and proper direction
and we will fly high like a butterfly”

Portland State University Gets Involved!

[Editor's Note: Text and photos from Andrea Hope]

Ariel Young (Atma Foundation PSU), Meg Waldron, (Portland Poetry Slam), Andrea Hope (Portland Poets Exchange)

In honor of National Poetry Month and girls’ education, slam poet Andrea Hope and Ariel Young, President of Portland State University’s Atma Foundation, hosted an open mic to benefit She’s the First! The ladies wanted this event to be free, so as many students as possible would attend to learn about the importance of girls’ education globally. To raise money, they decided to follow many She’s the First supporters and sell cupcakes.

The Atma Foundation lovingly baked dozens of cupcakes, while Andrea Hope got to work making flyers and inviting friends from the local poetry community. In addition to letting poets sign up for the open mic on facebook, Meg Waldron, from Portland Poetry Slam’s National Team, agreed to be the dynamic headliner of the night. The wonderful “Voice Your Verse” event was held at Portland State University on April 25th at 6PM and raised $241! They decided to put the money towards sponsorship of a girl at the Arlington Academy of Hope in Uganda.

Voice Your Verse: Our Vision Came True at Poets House!

On Tuesday, April 17, the Voice Your Verse Team and She’s the First supporters gathered together to fill the walls of the Poets House in Battery Park with sweet verses of poetry and music, to sponsor girls worldwide.

A night full of good conversation, delicious Georgetown cupcakes, the sultry chords of singer-songwriter Diane Birch, and a variety of poetry presentations fueled the crowd, climbing towards a goal of raising $10,000 to sponsor girls during National Poetry Month.

Host Azure Antoinette drew the group close, weaving together award presentations to two young world shakers—Jade Iovine & Bosilika An—and introducing impactful speakers, such as Karen Karpowich, Chairwoman for She’s the First, and Monique Coleman, star of Disney’s High School Musical and “first” ever UN Champion for the Youth. Special performances were given by the girls of the Young Women’s Leadership Network School of Astoria. They gave life to the words behind our young poets from India and winners of the Zinch.com contest.

Hannah Brencher, Director of the Voice Your Verse Campaign, introduced Tina Chang to the stage. Chang, the “first” female Poet Laureate of Brooklyn, delivered a poem inspired by her own daughter and the mission of She’s the First.

At the 8pm hour, the guest moved upstairs for a concert performance by singer-songwriter Diane Birch. There was also the chance to participate in the raffle and silent auction and purchase a Voice Your Verse Anthology. Submissions for the anthology came from a pool of more than 7,800 entries from individuals all over the country, spotlighting stand out work from the Zinch.com contest and poetry from our partner schools in India, Sudan, and Nepal.

A special thank you goes out to Ryan Maguire’s, Georgetown Cupcakes, Bodegas Riojanas, and Cowgirl Seahorse for the food, wine, and cupcakes throughout the night. Perhaps the biggest thank you of all goes to our participants and presenters through out the night and the Poets House for allowing us to host at their venue (recently spotlighted in the Wall Street Journal! Hoorah!)

Didn’t get to attend the event?

There is still time to be a part of the Voice Your Verse campaign and help us reach our 10K goal! Purchase an anthology just in time for a Mother’s Day gift, or check out the live stream of the event to see all the action from the night replayed!

Check out Kate Lord’s photos from the event here!

Introducing Our Zinch.com Poetry Contest Winner: Julia Solano

We’ve spent the last month reading and editing thousands of poetry entries submitted to the She’s the First #VoiceYourVerse Poetry Anthology via Zinch.com’s poetry contest for a chance to win a $500 dollar scholarship (including a $500 scholarship for Jancy, matched by Chegg)!

We read and experienced so many beautiful entries but we picked a winner that we think you all will adore! This winner will be featured in our first ever She’s the First Poetry Anthology (now on sale!) and her poem will be performed at the She’s the First Poetry Fundraiser on April 17th.

Meet Julia Solano from Hayward, California.

What was the inspiration behind your poem?

I’m not a ‘guru’ or specialist on anything, but I’ve always liked giving advice to those who are willing to listen. Also, the thought of being a starving college student is just a little terrifying.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to an incoming freshman?

Have fun. No, really. I’ve met way too many smart, dedicated kids that are so terrified of their futures that they don’t even enjoy the present. High school happens once. Enjoy it responsibly.

If you could study abroad any place in the world, where would it be?

Anywhere with good food. Just kidding! Kind of. Honestly, I would be excited and more than willing to go anywhere. Australia, England, Italy, Taiwan – you name it.

How are you more than a test score?

I personally dislike standardized testing. Don’t get me wrong; while it’s definitely important to do well and study for them, there’s just something unappealing about a four hour bubble sheet escapade. Now if my entire personality were distilled down to that, I feel like I’d have a rather dull existence. Fortunately, it’s not.

This interview is also available on Zinch’s Scholarship Blog: More Than a Test Score.

And now, without further ado, we bring you the winning entry by Julia Solano:

If the world was my classroom, and each thought was my stage

I would teach a girl to stand upright, even in the most perverse of days.

I’d tell her to listen intently to the sound of raindrops on windowpanes and to savor good meals and hearty conversations,

to stock up memories, for the harder days.

I’d tell her to find passion.

Which sometimes sits in creased eyelid and tilted back heads. It drips down cheeks and lands on laps where twiddling thumbs and impatient lovers gasp and thighs and arms brush.

Is sometimes found in the fury of violin strings or the pit-pat of fingertips on keyboard keys.

It’s sometimes found in careers and other times in songs, anywhere where souls drop themselves like beats and bombs or arms link like they belong.

Found sometimes in Starbucks tea on warm summer days or in rushed paintings or in heated debates.

Passion, like the electricity that tap-dances over feelings and fingertips, late nights and eager hips.

I’d tell her to wait for patience

Which sometimes pounces behind trial and error, raised voice and silent terror.

Patience.

The quiet ideal that breathes slowly whilst angered storm and untaken back mistake.

I’d tell her to never sell herself to fall in love

I’d show her the scars on this worn heart of mine, the bruises in bulk and sanity that I sacrificed for a once lover once upon a time.

Because being herself is the greatest gift she could give.

I’d tell her to search for wisdom.

Because every moment has its lesson, every scar represents a past transgression. Many know but fewer understand, life’s a gamble and the cards are in her hands.

I’d tell her that life isn’t about checklists, calendars or to-dos.

Life is a dance, a journey.

It exceeds a classroom and trickles into every essence, every part of you.

Julia’s entry and many more will be available in print edition on April 7th. Pre-order here!

We are also proud to announce the runner-ups to this contest. They will both receive a Beats by Dr. Dre prize pack. Their poems will be featured on the She’s the First Tumblr in the near future:

Celebrating Women’s Day with the Kibera School for Girls

The girls at the Kibera School for Girls are all style and substance!

Last Thursday, our friends at the Kibera School for Girls in Kenya celebrated International Women’s Day with song, dance, poetry, a fashion show and soccer match. The day was filled with joy as the entire community honored the strength and contributions of women. The girls were all smiles on the fashion show catwalk, stopping the show in shimmery gold dresses, feather boas, sparkly tiaras and colorful beads. Community members also cheered on a friendly soccer match between Shining Hope for Communities and Kibera Women for Peace. The Kibera School was joined in the festivities by local organizations like CareKenya and Fairness and Women’s Empowerment Link.

Though the day was filled with happiness, the Kibera Schools took time to call attention to a critical issue impacting women worldwide. They recited a poem that encouraged women to have the courage to rise above domestic abuse.

The girls read,

“It’s all up to you
You just have to get the courage to move on to something new
It’s not going to be easy.
Take it one day at a time.
They have to subside and you will finally have a peace of mind.”

The day’s theme, “Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures” epitomizes the incredible work of the Kibera School for Girls. Everyday, they nurture the minds, bodies, and spirits of their young girls to be tomorrow’s leaders. To catch a glimpse of day’s big celebration, click here to see photos taken by The Kibera Mirror, the local newspaper.

How did you celebrate International Women’s Day? Tweet us your answer and share in the comment section below!

Write a Poem, Win $500 for You, $500 for Jancy!

A guest post from the president of She’s the First*{Bryn Mawr}, Amanda Kennedy:

Follow Amanda at @msamandakennedy

My love of stories bloomed from reading to writing them when I was in kindergarten: I wrote and illustrated a book about my family, scrawled in vibrant markers and simple sentences. It was the most elementary of stories, but it told a story nevertheless, and sparked a desire to write more, about flower friends, Jewel Rider (my girl power Super Hero I made up at age 7), and a play-by-play of my Aunt and Uncle’s wedding.

Every girl has a story. Here is one of the most beautiful things about She’s the First: the stories of girls around the world can be continued and brightened through the education that She’s the First sponsors.

So what better way to tell a story than through poetry? Join She’s the First “Voice Your Verse Campaign” by writing poetry about girls education on the She’s the First web site, and you might make your dreams come true by becoming a published author – She’s the First will compile an anthology of promising poems, “If the World Were My Classroom.” Of course, 100-percent of proceeds will directly sponsor girls’ education in Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nepal, and India. Anyone can submit!

Students should submit their poetry to Zinch.com to be entered to win a $500 scholarship! By promoting the importance of educating girls, one person with the best poem will receive the gift of giving back from She’s the First to fund your own education.

And what’s more –Chegg for Good will match that with a $500 scholarship for Jancy, a student in India who is very much part of She’s the First’s story and has an amazing story of her own to tell. A senior at the Shanti Bhavan School, Jancy was the judge for She’s the First’s Cupcake T-shirt Design contest and is well on her way to making a difference in her community.

Education is

A way of sitting on a
Wonderful star and

Lighting up the world.

I entered a poem for the Voice Your Verse campaign through Zinch. Now, it’s your turn. Help to make the stories of girls come to life.

Learning Literature at Shanti Bhavan

[Editor's Note: Meet our newest guest blogger, Alison Perry, who’s currently completing her second stint as a volunteer teacher at Shanti Bhavan in India. The sophomore at Tulane will be sharing a few of her thoughts, photos and experiences with us!]

Students in an elective literature class at Shanti Bhavan

Hello from India! At Shanti Bhavan,  I teach Elective Literature to the 11th grade, which is actually a small class of only two girls, Kishori and Catherine, who are pursuing the liberal arts tract.

I really enjoy working with the girls in such a personal setting. We are able to have substantive conversations, and I feel like I’m getting to know their personalities along the way. The smallness of the class is particularly good for Kishori and Catherine, because when I’ve seen them in larger classes, they are sometimes hesitant to participate.

We’ve been working for a week with William Blake’s poetry. At first, they were very outspoken in their dislike for Blake, but slowly but surely they are coming to appreciate his nuanced (and sometimes highly complex) work. Catherine is particularly excited by the idea that his poems were considered “sacrilegious,” since students at SB come from all religious backgrounds, from Christian to Hindu to Atheistic. But they are all excited and eager to talk about questions or God, creation, and religious organization.

Today, we had a particularly illuminating discussion on the idea of opposites. Blake’s theme of innocence versus experience sparked the question “can we have innocence without experience?” At first they both adamantly insisted that opposites can exist independently of one another, but after reading the poem “The Tyger,” they have begun to question this assumption.

What do you think of the girls’ curriculum? Do you remember studying Blake in high school?

The Sequel to She’s the First Poetry Month

The campers show off their anthology (created with Azure in 3 weeks!) at their big finale at Cherry Lane Theatre!

There are many reasons I love Twitter. For the playful moments, like waging war for free ice cream from @BenJerrysTruck, which happened in my day job. There are the soulful moments, when a new follower in NYC becomes an offline friend, perhaps even a team member (@Marissa_Calhoun, @CarlaBlumenthal, @sjvandi on our team all found us that way), or a co-founder (the story of how GIRLS WHO ROCK leader @CynthiaHellen and I met).

But one Twitter success that will forever go down in history is when @shesthefirst tweeted our need for a poet last March, someone to help us teach a workshop connecting girls’ worldwide for this Poetry Month campaign idea we had. Non-profit @girlswritenow helped us out with a RT, and that’s how we found @azureantoinette. Azure’s She’s the First poetry workshop at the Young Women’s Leadership School in Brooklyn was so powerful (read about it!) that the school invited  her back for summer camp!

Cover of the Young Women's Leadership Schools students' summer poetry anthology

Today on the final day of camp, girls recited their poems, danced their hearts out, and listened to a poem Azure had written them, straight from the heart. Watch below!

As She’s the First continues to grow, we hope and dream that our Twitter-holism will foster a global classroom, a cause-minded creative community. While sponsoring girls in the amazing directory of She’s the First partner programs, we can never underestimate the impact we have on the classrooms in our own communities too. Thank you to the Young Women’s Leadership Schools, especially Polly Lagana and Tara Goulet, and most of all Azure for believing in She’s the First and making something so big out of one small idea!

She’s the First Poetry Month Aims to Sponsor a Girl in Sudan

In the U.S., April is National Poetry Month, started in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets. Their goal: “To increase the visibility and availability of poetry in popular culture.” This year, She’s the First wanted to be the first to make this occasion an international experience. Our goal: Sponsor a girl in Sudan, and connect young women worldwide in the process.

Hannah Brencher: She's the First Poetry Emcee, hannah@shesthefirst.org

It all started when Cynthia Hellen, STF Board Member & GIRLS WHO ROCK co-founder urged us to enter the 2011 Heart and Soul Grant Award Program — all we had to do was enter an 8-line poem expressing our mission. The prize: $10,000 for our cause, which we’d use to sponsor girls in our Directory. We enlisted one of the most talented writers on our team, Researcher/Blogger Hannah Brencher (hannahkaty.com), to compose our entry. These are two of her verses that moved us:

Because of someone I have never met
I now have the chance
To read and write my life out loud
And teach my dreams to dance

This is my chance to go to school
My chance to help and fix what’s broken
My chance to be the first of many girls
to make her voice outspoken

After reading this, we thought, why not make poetry a campaign to connect cultures across our network and sponsor a girl? The She’s the First #STFPoem Campaign was born. We’ve asked Hannah to “emcee” the campaign, blogging through the month for shesthefirst.org and rallying the social media and blogging community to join us.

Here’s the game plan:

Week of April 4: Publish poetry from the She’s the First “global girls” — from our partner programs in the Directory — as well as by our Emcee Hannah, along with favorite pieces by the great poets that inspire our work for girls worldwide. (Submit yours!)

Week of April 11th: Compose a unique poem through Tweets! More details to come, but make sure you’re following @shesthefirst for announcements, and use hash tag #stfpoetry.

April 19: A workshop in a Brooklyn high school, led by Oprah-approved poet Azure Antoinette. (We found each other on Twitter!) More exciting details to come!

April 20-April 30: The creation & sale of poetry e-cards to commemorate spring holidays (Easter, Passover, Administrative Professionals Day…) which we’ll design with verses collected through this month of poetry with our girls and supporters worldwide. The e-cards will be sold on shesthefirst.org for $4 each via PayPal, and our goal is to sponsor a year of education for a girl in Sudan, which is $365. If we sell 100 e-cards, we can do it!

So, are you in? Express yourself and educate!

Poetic Tribute to Mom — from Preetha at Shanti Bhavan

I come from the dull brown of my mother’s eyes
Watching over me while my eyes seek darkness,
Her warmth throwing me back to reality,
I come from the love of my mother’s tight, long embrace,

I am the answer for her pain,
That increases the lines etched upon her face,
These lines that spill her sufferings out during her troubled, restless nights,
These lines that push me further to lift her hunched shoulders,
Lift her bowed head toward my never fading light and ease her pain,

I am the shooting star,
I am the soaring chariot,
I am the sparkling dust of a falling star,
I am the unstoppable racer,
I am who I am because of her.

One day I will wipe from her face the waterfall of hopelessness,
And replace it with the river of hope and salvation.
I’ll make her dip her bruised, scarred body in it and make her forget her troubled past.
One day I will show the world I am that girl
Who shoots bullets into the sky,
And makes doorways of freedom, hope and relief,
Not only for my mother but for all those out there who are in need.

Shanti Bhavan is a partner of She’s the First, where you can sponsor a girl, for all or part of a year…see our Directory and write us at info@shesthefirst.org if you’re interested!
