She’s the First…Seen in a College Newspaper Near You!

You may remember hearing the good news a couple months ago — She’s the First won the Campus Media Group PSA contest! This means that ads (designed by our talented Art Director Genevieve Tabios of Syracuse University), which encourage college students to get involved and start She’s the First*{Campus} chapters, will be printed for FREE in campus newspapers across the country!

Campus Media Group informed us today that so far, 26 separate college newspapers ran our ads, at a total value of $12, 229.21!  Below you can take a glance at what it looks like in Unviersity of Alabama Birmingham’s Kaleidoscope.

The ads have also appeared in Ohio State’s Lantern, , Rutgers’ Daily Targum, and University of California – Santa Barbara’s Daily Nexus, among many others!

Extra! Extra! STF Wins Campus Media Group PSA Contest!

When fellow campus coordinator, Casey, and I were brainstorming our goals for She’s the First*{Campus} this summer, we decided to encourage every campus chapter to get published in their college newspaper. After all, how many times do we see students flipping through the school paper in the dining hall, checking out the result of the last sports game, filling out the crossword, or looking for what’s new on campus?

Turns out Campus Media Group was 10 steps ahead of us! Each year, Campus Media Group, “the college marketing experts,” select one non-profit organization with an important message for college students to publicize through a PSA contest. This year’s winner is…drum roll, please…She’s the First!

So what exactly does this mean for She’s the First*{Campus}? Campus Media Group will work with the 1,800 college newspapers that the agency represents, asking them to donate ad space for the She’s the First PSA at least once this year. That exposure in print and online in all the big campus publications is worth an estimated $100,000 in free advertising! She’s the First*{Campus} has been growing fast this year and we KNOW that this publicity will help us explode and reach out to excited college students across the country. We are so honored that Campus Media Group chose us for this opportunity and can’t wait to keep the STF community posted on what our final PSA looks like and the response we get from schools across the country!

Want more information on the Campus Media Group PSA contest? Check out their blog post about it here.

Thinking about starting your own chapter of She’s the First*{Campus} at your college or high school? Apply here! Send any questions to campus@shesthefirst.org.

Congrats, She’s the First, and thank you, Campus Media Group!

How to Broadcast the She's the First PSA on Your Campus/Community TV Station

[This is a guest blog post by Katie Corrado, a junior at Fordham University, telling us how she got the signature She's the First PSA broadcast on her campus news -- reaching students and the surrounding community. You can try this tactic too!]

As an anchor for the Fordham Nightly News and the coordinator of all its on-camera talent, I’ve seen the value in college television stations.  They are an incredibly powerful way to get relevant information out to the student body.

At Fordham, we play Public Service Announcements during our commercial breaks on the Fordham Nightly News (FNN).  PSAs are free and informative, allowing a college station with a small budget to promote worthy causes.

When I heard about the She’s the First PSA, using it on FNN seemed like a perfect fit.  With a little help from the tech people at the station, the She’s the First PSA will make its debut at Fordham this spring semester.  Not only will the organization’s message be broadcast around campus and streamed online, but thousands of local residents in the Bronx will also be exposed to She’s the First since FNN makes its debut on the public access channel BronxNet in January.

If you are interested in putting the She’s the First PSA on your college television station, contact the head of your school’s station or talk to a professor in your Communications/Journalism department. Even asking the department’s secretary for contact information could point you in the right direction.  Ask the person in charge at the station if they use PSAs for commercials.  If they don’t, suggest they use them, as they cost nothing and raise awareness about important issues.

Also be aware of the technical side of getting the PSA on air. How can the station actually put the PSA into its server?  Would they need it on a DVD?  External hard drive?  USB drive?  E-mail attachment?  Ask for specifics.

Make sure your TV station understands the relevancy of the She’s the First PSA.  There are tangible ways that young people can contribute to the organization’s efforts.  The audience is already there!  All you need to do is spread the word.
