Welcome to the Family, Mbithe!
She’s the First*{Syracuse} is thrilled to announce that we’ve been matched with a student to sponsor at the Kibera School for Girls in Kenya. We’d like to welcome kindergartner Mbithe Pius to the She’s the First family! (Isn’t she adorable?!)
Funds for Mbithe’s sponsorship are coming from the prize money we received from Vivanista’s Parties for a Purpose contest. We are so grateful to Vivanista for the $1,000 prize, and we’ve chosen to put $800 toward Mbithe’s education. This will sponsor her for more than two years.
We’re putting the other $200 toward covering the costs of holding a benefit concert next month at Funk ‘N Waffles, a popular venue near Syracuse University. We figured that putting a little bit of money into a big fundraising event, to then sponsor more girls, would result in a greater return on our investment.
We’re looking forward to receiving our first letter from Mbithe, and we can’t wait to share it with all of you. In the meantime, feel free to leave a welcome message for her in the comments section, and we’ll pass them along when we send her a letter in response!

Greetings from She’s the First*{Syracuse}
Hello from Syracuse University! Did you have an inspiring International Women’s Day?
Fittingly, the SU chapter of She’s the First held a meeting on the special occasion, and it was a great one! We welcomed new members Arianna, Yohanna, and Yuki, and came up with some new fundraising ideas. We also discussed the details of our benefit concert, which we hope to hold in conjunction with Vivanista’s Flash Fundraising weekend.
In the weeks leading up to the concert, we’ll be tabling in our student center, posting fliers around campus (we already have some designs), and searching for the best and brightest musical acts that Syracuse has to offer (trust us, there are plenty!).
In addition to all of this planning, we celebrated our victory in Vivanista “Parties With a Purpose” contest by choosing the Kibera School for Girls as the beneficiary of our prize money.
We closed out the meeting by recording a video message for all STF supporters!

Attention Colleges: Vivanista’s Newest Fundraiser Contest is For You!
We’re thrilled to announce a new contest that Vivanista is sponsoring, and if you’re a college student, you’re not going to want to miss this!
You may remember that our Syracuse University chapter won Vivanista’s “Parties With a Purpose” in January. The women at Vivanista enjoyed the video entry and promotional campaign for the video so much, that they’ve invited She’s The First to play a prominent role in their latest contest: Flash FUNdraising.
Here’s the deal: 20 selected college campuses across the country will hold major fundraisers throughout the weekend of April 15-17, with the help of a microgrant from Vivanista (some seed money to produce their fundraiser). Campus organizations at each school will compete to raise the most money, and the winning school will receive $1,000 for a charity of the students’ choice.
Additionally, Vivanista is awarding three other prizes for Most Creative Fundraiser, Greatest Social Impact, and Best Event Video.
It gets better: Vivanista has selected She’s The First as a recommended non-profit beneficiary! (That is, if the winning school isn’t sure where they’d like to donate their winnings, Vivanista will suggest STF as one of five deserving organizations.)
Want to get involved? Check out the timeline below and start working on the first step: Applying for a microgrant at vivanista.com. Be sure to keep She’s The First in the loop on your school’s progress; we’ll promote you right here on the blog!
- Launch: Week of February 28th
- Grant application period: March 1st – 30th
- Seed funding distribution : 1 Week prior to the event
- 48 Fundraiser Weekend: April 16th – 17th
- Winner of the Highest Funds Raised Award Announced: April 18th, 2011
- Voting for three awards begins: April 18th
- Winners of other three awards announced: April 25th, 2011
Good luck!
Your Vote Could Help Partner Starfish One by One Win $1,000

Mayra and her mother
She’s the First encourages young women to use their talents to creatively fundraise to sponsor girls’ education worldwide. Sammy Davis held a vintage clothing sale, six talented musicians lent their voices to GIRLS WHO ROCK, and a cupcake-baking frenzy has begun! So when I saw that Vivanista was having a photo contest that would donate $1,000 to the winner’s charity of choice, I decided to enter one of my photos from our recent #STF360 trip to Guatemala.
I chose this photo of Mayra and her mother, Eusebia, because it reminds me of the domino effect that educating a girl can have on her family and community. Not only is 16-year-old Mayra benefiting from the education and weekly mentoring she receives from Starfish One by One, but her mother is learning and growing, too.
If I get the most votes, I will send the money to our partner in Guatemala, Starfish One by One. But I need your help. Vote here everyday through February 14 to be a part of this sponsorship – I can’t do it without you!
We also get an additional vote every time someone “likes” the photo on Facebook.
With $1,000, Starfish can pay for 4 years of a girl’s education or 2/3 of the cost of a year of mentoring for a group of 15 girls.
Thanks for your help! Let’s do this together!

She’s the First Wins FIRST in Vivanista Video Contest!
As many of you know, She’s The First*{Syracuse} entered a video in Vivanista’s “Parties For a Purpose” contest. We were thrilled when we learned that we were one of the top 5 finalists, and on Saturday, even bigger news was announced: WE WON!
This is a victory for all She’s The First supporters. Our video received more than 6,000 votes, thanks to so many of you voting each and every day of the contest, and telling your friends to do the same. By posting the link to Vivanista’s voting page on Twitter, Facebook, and other social networking sites, you helped the word spread like wildfire.
We are so grateful to have won the $1,000 prize, and we plan to put 80% of the money toward girls’ sponsorships in a program from the She’s the First directory (we’ll decide which ones when She’s the First*{Syracuse} holds our first meeting of Spring semester, and we’ll keep you posted!). We’ll also reinvest 20% into an STF fundraiser at Syracuse University that raises more than $200 to send even more girls to school.
So thank YOU for using the power of social media to lead us to victory and help us transform girls’ lives!

“It’s Final: Your Favorite Party For A Purpose!”
The winner of the contest is She’s The First, a not-for-profit that sponsors girls’ education in the developing world!
Partying For a Purpose with She’s the First*{Syracuse}
Things are moving fast for the Syracuse University branch of She’s the First! Our first major project as a chapter was creating a video entry for Vivanista’s “Parties For a Purpose” contest. The goal of the contest is to promote fundraising through innovative and creative parties and gatherings. With events like GIRLS WHO ROCK and the She’s the First Soiree, She’s the First is a pro at bringing out the FUN in fundraising!
GIRLS WHO ROCK inspired our video, and we provided step-by-step instructions to viewers on how to throw an awesome party for a good cause.
Soon, we will need your help! Beginning January 1, 2011, Vivanista will post all of the entries on their website for public voting. The group whose video receives the most votes will win $1,000 toward their cause. We know you’re social media savvy—so get ready to Facebook and tweet up a storm to spread the word about our video.
We’ll keep you posted about the voting process. In the meantime, check out our video and leave some feedback. We’d love to hear what you think!
United Nations Week Digital Media Lounge: Day #2!
If yesterday was an inspiring experience, I truly have no words to express how blessed and humbled I felt by my experience today at the United Nations Week Digital Media Lounge. Today’s sessions revolved heavily around the care and keeping of girls and women around the globe, and, again, much was made of the importance of education in empowering women and girls to stand up for themselves, for their health and well-being, and for the good of their homes and communities.
One of the greatest highlights of the day was a session entitled, “What Girls Can Teach the World.” Moderated by Vivanista CEO and Founder Layne Gray, the panel featured an array of passionate and innovative women leaders, including Kim Perry, Director of Girl Up; Nancy Lublin, CEO of DoSomething.org; Zainab Salbi, Founder of Women for Women International; and Nancy Zhang, International Key Club Trustee. Each panelist was unbelievably articulate, and the entire audience was enlivened by the enthusiasm that came radiating off of the stage. These women so strongly believed in what they were saying– that young girls possess an incredible power to incite change; that education is the key to empowering girls around the globe to break free from the chains of poverty; that we must take responsibility for the well-being of our fellow women; and that we must continue our work until no girl is left without the ability to choose what she wants to do with her life. It was impossible to be in that auditorium and not feel an immediate urge to take action, and to encourage others to take action as well.
Following the panel, I had the incredible opportunity to speak with Kim Perry, the Director of the UN Foundation’s campaign, Girl Up. Much like She’s the First, Girl Up seeks to channel the power and influence of young girls here in the United States to educate girls around the globe who might not otherwise have the opportunity.
Naturally, this was an exhilarating experience– she has so much faith in the young women of our time to make a difference and to change the circumstances in which we live. She believes, as we do, that we can and must be the generation to ensure equal access to education around the globe. Kim was even kind enough to provide a message especially for She’s the First friends and followers, so check it out!
